“Much of songwriting is simply a mystery.” —Paul Simon

People always ask songwriters: “What comes first: the lyric or the music?”
Mostly... it’s magic. It’s voodoo. It’s some spiritual dance with my gut and my heart and my ears. Sometimes it’s luck! But mostly, I listen to songs and learn from them.

“For a songwriter, you don’t really go to songwriting school; you learn by listening to tunes. And you try to understand them and take them apart and see what they’re made of, and wonder if you can make one, too.” —Tom Waits
